Legal graffiti walls in Barcelona: where to paint today

Barcelona has 19 walls where you can paint graffiti and street art with no permit and no booking. They are run by the City Council (the Murs Oberts network), and the first one, at the Tres Xemeneies, was opened by Rebobinart on 28 October 2012. Here is the map, the address of every wall, the rules and what to know before you go.

The Tres Xemeneies: the wall that started it all

The Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies (Avinguda del Paral·lel, beside the three chimneys of the old Canadenca power station) is Barcelona’s first legal wall: painting was allowed there for the first time on 28 October 2012, when Rebobinart opened Murs Lliures with the City Council. Today it is a municipal Mur Obert and the meeting point of the city’s graffiti and street art scene.

Can you visit? Yes, any time: it is a public park, open 24 hours and free, with a skate park, ping-pong tables and three big walls that are repainted constantly. Every visit is different: pieces last days or weeks.

Getting there: metro Paral·lel (L2, L3) or Poble Sec (L3); buses 21, 88, D20, V11. The entrance is on Avinguda del Paral·lel, 49-59.

How painting on a Mur Obert works

Six things to know before you go. The full rules are on the City Council’s Murs Oberts page.

Pick a wall

Any wall on the list. No need to tell anyone or book a slot: there has been no booking platform since 2023.

Paint only inside the marked area

Each wall has a marked zone. Outside it, you are painting without permission and can be fined under the civic-behaviour bylaw.

Respect the rotation

The walls are free and rotating: your piece will be covered, and you can cover others. As a courtesy, don’t go over a piece finished yesterday if there is free space.

Content

Nothing offensive, discriminatory or commercial. The walls are public space and everyone walks past, children included.

Leave it clean

Take your cans, caps and tape with you. The Murs Oberts survive because the neighbourhood wants them.

Take a photo

Since Wallspot closed, the city no longer documents what gets painted. Post it and tag the wall: it is the only record that will remain.

2010

Persianes Lliures: artists paint shop shutters in Guinardó. The City Council stops it.

2012

Murs Lliures is born. On 28 October the first legal wall opens, at the Tres Xemeneies.

2016

Murs Lliures becomes Wallspot: 106 walls in 22 cities and 33,000 documented pieces.

2023

The City Council creates Murs Oberts and takes over the walls.

2024

Wallspot closes. The walls carry on, now as municipal facilities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I legally paint graffiti in Barcelona without a permit?

Yes, on the walls of the City Council’s Murs Oberts network: no permit or booking is needed, just respect the marked area and the rules. Outside these walls, painting in public space is fined under the civic-behaviour bylaw.

Do I need to book a slot or register?

No. Until September 2024 you booked on the Wallspot platform; since it closed, you simply turn up.

Can I visit the Tres Xemeneies? Is it free?

Yes. The Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies is a public park open 24 hours, free, next to Paral·lel metro station. The walls are repainted every week.

How many legal walls are there in Barcelona?

19 today, according to the official catalogue of the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (this page syncs with the catalogue). There were 14 in April 2023.

What happened to Wallspot?

Wallspot, Rebobinart’s platform for booking legal walls, closed on 30 September 2024 after twelve years. The walls have been managed by the City Council since 2023.

Are there legal walls in Madrid or other cities?

Yes. Rebobinart opened legal walls in Madrid (Moratalaz and Puente de Vallecas, 2020) and Wallspot reached 22 cities. Each council keeps its own list; this page covers Barcelona only.

We are a city council: can we have free-use walls?

Yes. We design the model for municipalities: an inventory of surfaces, rules of use, neighbourhood agreement and documentation. See our murals for institutions service or write to us.

I want a mural for my company or shop

The Murs Oberts are free-use and non-commercial. If you want a legal mural for a façade, premises or a campaign, Rebobinart produces it with permits and professional artists.
