Urban intervention ÚS BARCELONA 2016, Can Ricart Barcelona

9.5.2015

Over the weekend of 9 and 10 May 2015, the second edition of the Ús Barcelona festival took place along a stretch of Carrer Pere IV. The event followed the same approach as its first year: a festival where urban art takes over different areas of the city that have fallen out of use due to urban changes and lost their social function. Through art, citizen participation, social innovation, creativity and experimentation, transformative synergies are created that bring practical value but, above all, symbolic and emotional value — restoring residents’ sense of identification with the empty spaces in their neighbourhoods.

This second edition placed special emphasis on this citizen participation, working in the months before the festival with residents and artists to build alliances aimed at improving the neighbourhood. The idea was to build a collective narrative around the neighbourhood’s history that could be expressed artistically, while also putting residents’ needs on the table. To do this, we worked closely with the Taula Eix Pere IV, the Poblenou neighbourhood association (AA-VV), l’Escocesa, and we collaborated with the Esplai del Sagrat Cor and, in particular, with the residents living along the stretch where Ús Barcelona intervened.

Following this participatory methodology, artistic interventions were carried out on the ground of the square and along the whole street, and the neighbourhood’s history and needs were successfully passed on to the other artists as a source of inspiration for the interventions they would carry out during the festival days. With this starting point, the event was designed as a whole, becoming an amalgam of proposals ranging from live artist exhibitions to attendees taking part in talks and workshops, as well as live music and performances or interactive installations.

More than 12,300 people attended the festival, witnessing the artistic intervention of local and international artists all along Carrer Pere IV, on the stretch between Carrer Fluvià and Carrer Selva de Mar.

The gathering was a success both in terms of turnout and citizen participation, and in terms of the organisations, artists, residents and groups who took part.
