Casa de la Cultura by SPOGO & ONCE — a mural in Sant Cugat del Vallès

Dignifying spaces is no easy task. Public spaces, as the name suggests, have a whole web of “owners”: town councils, residents, neighbourhood associations, private organisations, among others. Before taking any action, the first step is to understand the surroundings and the needs and priorities of the people who make up that space.

Casa de la Cultura de Sant Cugat was our space to work with. Managing this space was an interesting challenge, which is why we took into account its location, its particular character, residents’ needs and their view on what kind of mural would help give the square added value. Artists Spogo and ONCE did a great job combining every element at play in creating a mural suited to the space. The intention behind the mural was purely aesthetic, blending the architecture of the space with the artwork and, taking the surrounding colour palette as a starting point, achieving a visual harmony with its surroundings, exactly as the brief called for.
