La Cucanya: shared effort and neighborhood pride in the Tacó

La Cucanya is a large-format mural created by the artist Oriol Arumí in Cucanya Square, in the Tacó neighborhood of Vilanova i la Geltrú. The work is part of the Teixint Barri (Weaving the Neighborhood) project, a community initiative by Rebobinart that, for the past four years, has used urban art as a tool for social cohesion and the recovery of collective memory.

A symbolic space for the community
Cucanya Square is a central point in the Tacó: an intergenerational meeting place where neighbors play, talk, and celebrate. Through participatory workshops, memories, words, and emotions were gathered that describe the symbolic value of this space and have served as the foundation for the visual narrative of the mural.

This participatory process reinforces the idea of community-based urban art, one of the pillars that defines Rebobinart’s projects.

The art of Oriol Arumí: sensitivity and visual storytelling
Oriol Arumí (Lleida) is known for his ability to blend poetic realism with strong visual narrative. In this mural, the artist portrays a child climbing the cucaña pole, an image full of symbolism: perseverance, shared effort, and a spirit of overcoming challenges.

The precise linework, the use of light, and the depiction of an everyday scene turn the mural into a symbol of the Tacó — a monumental yet intimate image that dignifies the stories of the neighborhood.

“Tacó Neighborhood”: a statement of identity
The intervention incorporates a clear, contemporary typeface with the name of the neighborhood. This inscription reinforces local pride and provides a strong and recognizable visual identity.

The game of the cucaña as a metaphor for life in the neighborhood
The mural reinterprets the traditional cucaña game as a metaphor for collective progress: overcoming challenges, moving forward with effort, and growing thanks to mutual support. As in the game, the value lies not only in reaching the top, but in doing so together.

A mural created by the community
The project involved the direct participation of local residents. Through workshops and creative activities, the people who live in the Tacó helped shape the mural’s narrative. This makes La Cucanya a shared work — a collective result that strengthens social bonds and nurtures a sense of belonging.

Looking to the future: urban art with social impact
With this intervention, Cucanya Square becomes a lively space filled with memory and future. The mural connects past and present and projects a hopeful outlook based on the strength of its community fabric. The Tacó continues weaving identity, culture, and community through urban art.
