Inaugurating Murs Lliures — freeing the first legal walls for street art

We’re launching the Murs Lliures project by freeing up the walls at Tres Xemeneies! On 28 October, join us at the park to keep on claiming legal spaces for urban art!

It seems our persistence has finally paid off, and we’re delighted to present the Murs Lliures project (www.murslliures.com), which aims to secure as many legal spaces as possible for artistic interventions. From now on, the web platform will be available to process permits quickly for anyone who wants to paint in this space. Don’t hesitate to sign up and show off your talent!

We’ve made it so that no sketch of the intended intervention needs to be submitted beforehand, guaranteeing creative freedom, as long as it doesn’t infringe on people’s fundamental rights.

We also guarantee, under data protection law, that participants are fully protected once they register on the web platform and request permits to paint. The City Council will never have access to participants’ personal data, and should anyone request it, Murs Lliures will delete the data of anyone who wants it removed.

We want to thank the work done by Barcelona City Council’s Commission for Participation and Associations, and the Sants-Montjuïc District, for being the first to embrace the Murs Lliures initiative. We keep talking with every district in the city so that they hand over more walls and spaces for urban art. We encourage you to send us proposals for new walls that would be interesting to paint, and the Murs Lliures team will process the requests. We also ask for your patience, since this is a slow and often complicated process.

Alongside this negotiation process with each district, Rebobinart is working to make sure this project is shared across the whole neighbourhood, which is why we present it and talk with local associations and organisations so they support and get involved with it.

We want to break down prejudices around urban art, so it gets the recognition it deserves. That’s also why we’re asking for your participation: to show the quality of Barcelona’s urban art. Now is the moment to prove that the long-standing demand for legal spaces to paint was a fair and necessary one.

So, we’re waiting for you all on 28 October at 11:00am at the opening of Murs Lliures, with the unveiling of the Tres Xemeneies walls. Some artists who have already worked with us before will take part, and one of the walls will be set aside for everyone to leave their signature, showing just how many urban artists the city has, all in favour of having legal spaces to paint in the street.
