WOMART by Aïda Gómez

Glass Path: according to Aïda Gómez, is the journey that women artists must take to achieve the same recognition as their male colleagues is a glass path, labyrinthine and complex. Based on this idea, the artist has made an intervention in Carrer de la Riera, in Mataró, where he has reflected this reality through two routes differentiated by gender. This intervention is part of the Womart project, an initiative of Rebobinart that aims to reclaim the need to recognize and make more visible the female talent in the visual arts and promote gender equality in all artistic visual disciplines. The realization of this mural has been promoted by the Xarxa Transversal with the support of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
In the video, Aïda Gómez explains Glass Path, her piece for WOMART in Mataró: instead of the glass ceiling, she proposes two paths painted on the ground as a game. «The men's path is straight and simple; the women's is longer and more labyrinthine.»

The work I have made for WOMART is called Glass Path and refers to the famous glass ceiling, but this time, instead of a ceiling, I propose two paths. There is the men's path, which is straight and simple; and then the women's path, as you can see, is longer and more labyrinthine, because I think that in many areas, not only in the art world, women have a longer path with more obstacles than men's.
I would like the people of Mataró to be surprised by this game I have placed in their city, and to make them think a little and give visibility to that sad reality. Even though I have used a game, which is something harmless and which people of any age can take part in, I hope it works as a seed for starting to change this situation.
This situation could improve if we gave visibility to the current problem. Initiatives like this WOMART one, where the problem itself is the festival's driving force, are a good thing.
