Artistic intervention HYURO, WOMART Jam, women's art Barcelona

On April 7 of 2018, the artist Hyuro executed a large-format mural in the Casal de Joves La Palma, in the city of Reus. In this piece, the artist invites us to think over the pressures and social charges that are attributed to women. This intervention is part of the Womart project, an initiative of Rebobinart that aims to reclaim the need to recognize and make more visible the female talent in the visual arts and promote gender equality in all artistic visual disciplines. The realization of this mural has been promoted by the Xarxa Transversal with the support of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

In the video, Hyuro explains her mural for the WOMART project: two women, one lifting the other's cloak to help her free herself of it. «Folds always take me back to burden, to weight, to the complexity of what has been lived.» She also explains why she looks for a discourse different from advertising's.

Thinking about a wall, about what I am going to depict: I am inspired by what happens in the city, by reality, by the context the wall is in. I always try to look for the themes that belong to the place where the wall is located.

The line my work follows, and what personally gives it meaning for me, is producing a discourse different from the one we are used to in advertising, from what the system imposes on us, which is all impositions, assertions, happiness. I think we are afraid to talk about conflict or to look at it, and so we are always denying it. And I think the healthy way to get past things is to face them.

—Well, as a neighbour and a passer-by, the truth is I love seeing art being created anywhere. And right opposite my house: for me it is an honour.

The work is inspired by the project's concept. The image shows two women, one lifting the other's cloak, helping her free herself of it. The cloth itself, the folds, always take me back to burden, to weight, to the complexity of what has been lived: it is as though the folds, all the creases… So it speaks a little about that: the woman shedding the cloak, that whole struggle through history for visibility.
