Octavi Serra – The Hidden Barcelona
Nou Barris, Barcelona / December 2025
An installation by Octavi Serra that reflects on the impact of mass tourism and the loss of visibility of everyday Barcelona.
The artist: Octavi Serra
Octavi Serra is a visual artist and photographer whose practice is based on minimal intervention, conceptual gesture, and direct engagement with public space. His work focuses on observing and highlighting what often goes unnoticed, using everyday objects and common situations to trigger critical readings of the city and the way we inhabit it.
Through installations, ephemeral actions and urban interventions, Octavi Serra offers a careful and incisive view of the territory, inviting viewers to question dominant narratives and rethink the identity of urban spaces from everyday experience.
The artwork: “Hidden Barcelona”
Location: Ronda de Dalt – Via Favència, Nou Barris, Barcelona.
The installation Hidden Barcelona is a visual reflection on the impact of mass tourism in the city. The work starts from a recognizable element: an entrance sign with the name “Barcelona,” a symbol of welcome and urban identity. However, this sign appears almost completely covered by a multitude of fridge magnets, the most common tourist souvenirs.
The magnets display iconic images and clichés associated with the city —FC Barcelona, the Sagrada Família, Gaudí— which at first glance may seem like a tribute. Yet this accumulation ends up suffocating the name “Barcelona” itself, which becomes nearly invisible beneath a layer of consumerist tourism mementos.
The work invites viewers to consider to what extent this commercial overexposure is masking the city’s true identity. The installation acts as a metaphor for Barcelona turned into a theme park, where everyday life, neighbourhoods, and the rhythm of its inhabitants are hidden behind a landscape of postcards and souvenirs.
Hidden Barcelona is an invitation to look beyond clichés and rediscover the city from its most immediate reality, before its essence is completely diluted beneath a pile of prefabricated images.
NOU Sentit Urbà: urban art in the Nou Barris distric
This intervention is part of the 18 artistic actions of the NOU Sentit Urbà project, promoted by Barcelona City Council and produced by Rebobinart, with the collaboration of the Nou Barris District and local neighborhood communities.
The project recovers collective memories and local identities through murals, installations, and participatory processes, addressing themes such as older age, sustainability, migration, neighborhood women, vernacular architecture, or sport as a force for cohesion. Each intervention adds a piece to Nou Barris’ shared story, reinforcing the value of memory and the role of urban art as a tool for social transformation.
