Shop shutters

Painted shop shutters in Barcelona

We turn your shop’s roller shutter into a mural: street art that keeps your business visible when it is closed, discourages tagging and gives the street an identity. With the «Persianes que fan barri» project we are painting 185 shop shutters across Barcelona — more than anyone else.

Why paint your shop shutter

A grey metal shutter is an invisible shop for 14 hours a day. A mural on the shutter is the cheapest and most-seen medium a neighbourhood shop has.

Visible 24 hours a day

When the shop closes, the shutter keeps telling people who is behind it: the product, the trade, the person. A window display that never switches off.

Less tagging and vandalism

A shutter painted by an artist is respected on the street. It is the most effective anti-graffiti there is — and the most beautiful.

Identity and local trade

Portraits, trades, neighbourhood icons: every design starts with a conversation with the shopkeeper. Neighbours recognise it and make it their own.

A shopping street people visit

A trail of painted shutters brings visitors, photos and press. For retailer associations and city councils it is retail regeneration you can see the same day.

How we paint a shop shutter

Without closing the shop for a single day. We manage the artist, the materials, the schedule and the communication.

    1

    A conversation with the shop

What you sell, since when, what you want people to remember. That is where the idea comes from.

    2

    Artist and sketch

We propose the artist that fits the style of the business and you approve the design before painting.

    3

    Painting outside opening hours

Painted with the shutter down, after closing time or on a Sunday. Usually one shutter per day.

    4

    Finish and protection

Weatherproof paint and a protective varnish: the shutter withstands years of opening and closing.

    5

    Photography and promotion

Professional photography, a page on our website and posts on our social channels: the shutter starts working for the shop.

How much does it cost to paint a shutter?

A painted shutter costs between €300 and €1,300: from a simple design to a highly detailed portrait or scene. The price depends on the artist, the size of the shutter (usually 2 to 4 metres wide), the complexity of the design and whether it is part of a shopping-street programme, where the cost is shared between shops or funded by the retailers’ association or the council.

Frequently asked questions about painted shutters

How much does it cost to paint a shutter?

Between €300 for a simple design and €1,300 for a highly detailed shutter, depending on the artist, the size and the complexity. In a shopping-street programme the cost per shop drops because it is shared or funded by the retailers’ association or the council.

Do I need a permit to paint a shop shutter in Barcelona?

For an artistic design on your own shutter, the owner’s authorisation is generally enough. If the design includes a brand or advertising message, Barcelona’s urban landscape regulations apply: we check and handle it before painting.

Do I have to close the shop while it is being painted?

No. The shutter is painted while it is down, outside opening hours (early morning, evening or Sunday). The next day you open as usual.

How long does it take to paint a shutter?

Usually one working day per shutter, depending on size and level of detail. On a shopping street we paint several shutters a week on a schedule agreed with each shop.

How long does a painted shutter last?

Years. We use spray paint and exterior paint on a prepared shutter and finish with a protective varnish. The shutters we painted in 2010 with «Persianes Lliures» still look good.

Can I choose the artist and the design?

Yes. We propose two or three artists from our network of more than 500 creators depending on the style you want, and the final design is approved with you before painting. If you are a retailers’ association, a single artist can give the whole street a unified look.
