A Feminist Mural Transforming Public Space

The Mural 8M Sant Martí is an urban art intervention commemorating March 8, 2025, and the feminist struggle in the streets of Barcelona. Located at Trinxant Street, 14, this mural has become a collective symbol of the feminist movement in Sant Martí.

This project, led by Rebobinart, was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Sant Martí Women’s Council, the Sant Martí District, and the ICUB. It is part of the Murmurs program and the Womart initiative, both of which reclaim public space as a platform for female artists and social transformation through urban art.

A Participatory Mural: The Voice of the Community

The mural, titled “Women in Motion: The Struggle Continues”, represents the continuous relay between generations in feminism. What makes this piece truly special is its participatory process, where voices, stories, and community claims were gathered.

On February 19, 2025, a participatory session took place at La Farinera del Clot, facilitated by Globus Vermell. Women from various local organizations – including Associació In Via, the Ciutadella Park Neighborhood Association, and the Sant Martí Women’s Council – contributed their reflections, shaping the concept of the mural.

Key Feminist Values Reflected in the Mural

During the session, three core ideas emerged, now embedded in the mural’s design:

Ongoing struggle and resistance: Feminism cannot stop.
Relay race: We progress thanks to those who came before us and must pass the torch to future generations.
Sisterhood and alliances: The struggle only makes sense if we fight together.

These values have been translated into shapes, colors, and compositions that now bring this wall to life.

Núria Toll: The Artist Behind Mural 8M Sant Martí

The mural was created by Núria Toll, an illustrator and muralist born in Igualada in 1988. With a geometric and minimalist style, her work plays with chromatic compositions and symbolism to convey powerful and direct messages.

Her participation in Womart is no coincidence: Toll has been working for years to highlight feminist narratives in urban art. With this mural, she reaffirms the importance of public space as a setting for social change and activism.

Womart: Women Artists Reclaiming Public Space

The Mural 8M Sant Martí is not just an artistic piece but also a political statement within Womart, a Rebobinart initiative advocating for gender equality in urban art.

Since its inception in 2018, Womart has claimed the right of female artists to express themselves in public spaces, traditionally dominated by men. Through interventions in various Catalan cities, the project has amplified the voices of artists such as:

Paula Bonet, challenging beauty standards at the Empordà Museum in Figueres.
Lula Goce, merging nature and emotion in a mural in Vilanova i la Geltrú.
BTOY, honoring female artisans in Olot with a mural at the Saints Museum.
Feminist Jam in Barcelona, where multiple artists transformed the Tres Xemeneies Park into a collective outcry against gender violence.

With each edition, Womart continues to create a feminist legacy in urban art, making visible what is often left unseen.

Beyond Mural 8M Sant Martí: Art, Feminism, and Public Space

This mural is a reminder that public space is also a space of struggle. The walls of our cities tell stories, demand rights, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

With this intervention, the women of Sant Martí have claimed a wall and turned it into a collective voice, a living memory engraved in the neighborhood.

Urban art has always been a form of resistance and social expression, yet the field remains overwhelmingly male-dominated. That’s why initiatives like Womart and projects like the Mural 8M Sant Martí are crucial in building a more inclusive and equal public space.
